NEW YORK CITY: Park 51 project, "Ground Zero Mosque"
A group of 10th graders from the Bronx on a field trip at the Park 51 mosque, where Police presence is permanent, in the vacant 1850s Italianate-style Burlington Coat Factory building two blocks from the trade center site. When the project was announced there were protests against what detractors call the "Ground Zero mosque". The site is now protest-free and has become a tourist attraction. Anyone is welcome to visit the mosque..Park 51 is a planned 13-story Muslim community center which would include a 500-seat auditorium, theater, performing arts center, fitness center, swimming pool, basketball court, childcare area, bookstore, culinary school, art studio, food court, September 11 memorial, and the Muslim prayer space that would accommodate 1,000-2,000 people.
